Activity: Animals and Ailments

Level: A2 & up

Group size: 3+

Time: 5-10 minutes

Preparation: Here is a really fun way to practice illness vocabulary. Make 2 lists, one of animals and the other of ailments and number each list 1 –20.

Instructions:  Have one student come up and give you 2 numbers (e.g. 4 &17). You then give the student the animal and ailment that corresponds with those numbers and they must act them out for their classmates to guess (e.g. An elephant with a stuffy nose).

Activity: 2nd Conditional Story ChainActivity: Animals and Ailments

Level: B2

Group size: 1 to 1, 2 to 1 or Group

Time: 10 minutes

Preparation: Set up a (clean!) waste basket on the opposite side of the room

Instructions:  Start off the story with a 2nd conditional sentence such as, ‘If I had a dog, I would go to the park.’ The next student uses the second part of the sentence to begin their 2nd conditional sentence: ‘If I went to the park, I would play on the swings.’ The story continues on and the last student must find an ending.

TIP: In groups, have students work in pairs to boost STT.

3. Activity: Language Pong

Level: Any

Group size: 1 to 1, 2 to 1 or Group

Time: 10 minutes

Preparation: Set up 10 plastic cups in a triangle on the opposite side of the table (1 set for every 4 students). Cut your target language up into individual strips of paper and place 1 strip in each cup.

Instructions:  The student will throw a pingpong ball aiming for the cups. When they get the ball in a cup they must use the target language from that cup in the correct context. For grammar points, have several verbs in each cup so that the game lasts several rounds.

Activity: Preposition Basket Ball

Level: A2, B1

Group size: 1 to 1, 2 to 1 or Group

Time: 10 minutes

Preparation: Set up a (clean!) waste basket on the opposite side of the room

Instructions: Surround the basket with classroom items such as pens, pencils, staplers, books, etc.  Students throw a paper ball into the basket. If they miss they must say where the paper ball landed using prepositions of place (ex: ‘The ball is between the book and the pen’). If they make it in they get a point and can choose any preposition of place to make a sentence.

Activity: Ring the Bell

Level: A2

Group size: 2 to 1, Group

Time: 10 minutes

Instructions: Begin by splitting your students into pairs. Then give your students the definition to one of your target language words. The first student to guess the answer must run to the front of the class and ring the bell!
