Every person who spends more than six months a year living in Madrid needs to “empadronarse” at their address, which basically means that you become part of the official list of residents. This procedure is mandatory and it will prove the amount of time that you’ve spent in Madrid. When searching for information, it sounds a lot more complicated than It really is, so we have simplified it so that you don’t stress over it and can get it done as soon as possible.
Give an address
To be able to “empadronarte”, you will need to provide an address. This doesn’t mean that you have to own a place, it can be the flat you rent or even a relative’s address.
Prior appointment
Before going to the Oficinas de Atención a la Ciudadanía-Línea Madrid, you need to book an appointment. If you don’t, you will waste your time since they don’t do exceptions. You can do that in the following link.
Documentation
To successfully complete the process, you need to bring with you the following documentation:
Solicitud de empadronamiento
You need to fill in this form and present it on the day of your appointment. You can download it here.
If you are an EU member, you need to take your NIE with you and your passport or ID card. Non-EU members need to take their passport and the original residence permit.
The last phone company, electricity or any other bill that proves where you live. If you rent then your contract should be enough. If you rent and don’t have a contract then you can have the person who is responsible for the property (main tenant or owner) to fill in that specific section of the above form. If you own the apartment then the deed will be enough.
