Writing a resume/CV is never an easy task but it can be tough to know if you’re on the right track. Should I put this information? Should I take this out? What goes first? To help you write a resume we have come up with some tips that will make your life easier when it comes to selling yourself:
Follow the standard structure
When it comes to writing your resume, you can be more or less creative in the way you decide to do it but there are some aspects that all resumes should cover. These include: personal and contact information; education and qualifications; work history and/or experience; relevant skills to the job in question; own interests, achievements or hobbies; and some references.
Make an effort on the presentation
Companies receive hundreds of CV’s for each job offer. If your CV is difficult to read, has misspellings and the structure is unclear, it is very likely that they will throw it away without even reading it. Make sure that the layout is clean and that you double check the spelling.
Don’t make it unnecessarily long
A good resume should be concise and clear. Employers receive hundreds of resumes and they don’t have enough time to read each them cover to cover. Only include relevant information and try to stick to a maximum of two pages of A4 paper.
Tailor the resume to the role
Once you’ve read the job specifications and you know what the job entails, adapt your resume to that role. Every resume should be tailored according to the position you are trying to get, so make sure you create a unique resume where you focus on the relevant skills for the position.
Keep your resume updated
It is key that you update your resume on a regular basis. If you do some volunteering or take a course while working, for example, make sure you add it to your resume!
Add some references
Add at least two references of someone who has employed you in the past. These people should be able to give information about your skills and experience. If you have never worked before, you can always use a teacher as a referral.
Give a timeline
If you are in a new country or city looking for a job be sure to give a concrete idea of how long you plan on staying there. If you moved there to live with your partner, you’re on a 1 year visa, or if you moved there permanently then communicate the reason. Companies want to invest in their employees and they are probably wondering if you are ready to do the same.
