Have you always dreamt of moving abroad and would like to add international experience to your CV ? Are you tired of your job and want to change careers? Teaching English is a fantastic way of building a new life and experience new adventures.
In Madrid and Spain, there is a huge demand for English teachers and you can choose between teaching kids, teenagers or adults, depending on what you like most. Not only you will get to meet lots of interesting people, but you will also be able to sort out your schedule so that it suits your lifestyle! Want to know how to become an English teacher? Keep on reading!
The first thing you need to know is that the fact that you speak English, even if it is your native language, doesn’t mean you would make a good English teacher. In order to get a good job, the first thing you should look into is a certified TEFL course. TEFL means Teaching English as a Foreign Language. In this course, you will learn everything you need to know before standing up in front of your students: how to plan a class, what to teach depending on your students’ level, how to correct them without making them self-conscious, etc. In addition, you will have some observed classes in which you will get to put into practice all the theory and go into the market feeling confident about your new skills.
But… where to look for a job once you successfully graduate from your TEFL course? There are plenty of options for you to choose from! Here we go:
Are you the adventurous type? Then this might be the perfect position for you! Working at Summer camps means dealing with children or teenagers practically all-day long. You don’t have to teach in the traditional way, but you do have to lead activities, play games, have lunch with them, etc. Usually camp teachers get free accommodation in a fab place, which means that you will get to see new places and travel while making some money.
If you love kids and want to fully experience the local culture of the country you are planning on going to, then this is probably your best choice! Being an au-pair means working in a family and helping parents with the children. You will get to help them with their homework, play, pick them up or drive them to wherever they need to go to, etc. You can work per hour or you can live at their place, depending on what you prefer.
Don’t want to stay in just one place? Then online lessons are for you! Even though the hourly rate is a bit lower, all you need is your computer and internet connection. For those who suffer from wanderlust, this is a great option that allows them to combine work and travel.
Last, but not least… you always have the option of working in English academies! Here you can teach both children or adults and you can be full time working at the same place or combine between different academies to fill as many hours as you want to do.
